RACE REPORT: LANIER, GA – LANIER SPEEDWAY
Written by: Southern Pro Challenge
LINCOLNTON, NC – (September 30th, 2009) For the second week in a row the Saturday event at Lanier National Speedway was cancelled due to rain. Forcing the double feature event to be moved to Sunday afternoon. North region star, Ryan Heavner, proved he could adapt to any racetrack by winning the 8-lap heat race. Kyle Benjamin proved he could handle a tight day of racing by winning the first of two features and Jacob Wallace made a point with him being involved in a first lap malay to come home victorious in the second feature.
With Saturday’s racing being cancelled at Lanier National Speedway, due to weather conditions, Sunday’s action was wild and furious. The start of the heat race had Austin Raines on the pole with Anderson Bowen outside. When the green flag dropped North Carolina’s Ryan Heavner came straight to the front from the second row inside leaving Bowen and Raines to follow. With Lanier regulars Benjamin, Boswell, Hoek and Wallace chasing hard and fast. Lap 5 brought out the caution for a spinning car which tightened the field up and made racing interesting. When the green fell Heavner had a hand full holding off the hard charging pack following him. However when the checkered waved, it was him on the point with Bowen, Benjamin, Wallace, Boswell and Jesse Hoek right on his tail running side by side with a blanket able to cover the remainder of the 10 car field.
The start of the first feature had the 77 of Heavner on the pole with Bowen on the outside. However, at the drop of the green Benjamin and Boswell stayed hard on the bottom leaving Bowen to follow them going off into turn 3 chasing Heavner to the start/finish line with Hoek and Wallace following close behind. By lap 2 the 71 car of Benjamin had passed the 77 of Heavner, however, the two of them got together coming off turn 4 which brought out the caution sending both of them to the rear. When the green flag fell it was the 2 car of Boswell and the 32 truck of Wallace battling for the lead followed by Hoek and Bowen. Lap 8 brought out another caution for the spinning car of Melina Rolo after breaking an axle, which is just what Benjamin and Heavner needed to work their way to the front. Once racing resumed these 2 cars worked together trying to get to the front, however, on lap 22 the spinning car of Williams brought out another caution leaving Benjamin leading the way with Boswell, Wallace, Heavner and Hoek following close behind. Taking the checkered flag was Benjamin, Boswell, Wallace and Jesse Hoek with Ryan Heavner coming in 5th.
With Bowen encountering overheating issues in the first feature and finishing last, him starting on the pole for the inverted second feature proved to be costly. While coming to the green flag he was bumped from behind which turned him sideways in front of the whole field and created a total disaster with the cars at full throttle taking the green. Thus eliminating him, Benjamin and Jesse Hoek from the second feature. Wallace being involved in the incident went into the pits and made quick repairs to his number 32 truck which enabled him to come home in victory lane with Heavner taking second and Boswell third.
With only one more race to go in this 3 race special, Wallace with an impressive 3rd place finish in the first feature and a win in the second puts him ahead in the points standings with Brady Boswell and Ryan Heavner following close behind.
