RACE REPORT: CONCORD, NC – CONCORD MOTOR SPEEDWAY
Written by: Ryan Heavner Racing
LINCOLNTON, NC – (November 16th, 2009) This final race was one of the most electrifying and dramatic races in the history of the 2009 season for us. The Ryan Heavner racing team qualified a disappointing 8th to start the day off when we had a top four car in practice all day. At the drop of the green flag, to our misfortune, the competitor in front of us missed a shift causing us a lot of cosmetic damage that put us in the pits on lap one. Fortunately, Ryan was able to stay on the lead lap in hopes of getting a caution to bunch the field back up.
Caution! Finally, we got the caution we were hoping for and the #77 machine was headed back to the front of the pack with the title up for grabs, Ryan was focused on trying to achieve a national title in his rookie season. As he picked off the field one by one, he entered turn 3 under a competitor that choose to turn left instead of hold their line, causing yet another caution that the #77 machine was involved in. This caution left us with a broke spindle and a trip to the pits.
Having thought our day was over, the green flag dropped again only to encounter a multiple car pile up that red flagged the race for some time. This delay in activity allowed the #77 crew to replace the spindle and shortly after the restart of the race with about 13 laps remaining, the #77 machine hit the track again to try for a final finish. Today’s race took out several of the top Pro Challenge contenders leaving this race to chance. At the drop of the checkered flag, we managed to bring home a 7th place finish in a race we so badly wanted to capitalize on. This finish cost us a Rookie of the Year, but left us with 2nd place in the Regional Series point standings, as well as a 7th place in the National standings.
Ryan has had an awesome season with 3 wins in the books as well as some very respectable consecutive finishes.
