RYAN HEAVNER NEW SMYMA PRESS RELEASE
Written By: WaltersWebDesign.com
April 21st, 2010 (ST. LOUIS, MO) Ryan Heavner had never taken a green flag at New Smyrna (FL) Speedway before Saturday’s USAR Pro Cup Crane Cams 250. That should be quite intimidating for a 14 year-old rookie in one of the country’s top touring series, but Heavner was unshaken.
“Of course, all new tracks create new challenges, but being able to adapt is what makes a true driver in this sport,” Ryan says.
The Kirk May Racing Team battled a tight condition with Ryan’s car all day, and a 17thplace qualifying attempt was the result. The qualifying lap – 19.536 seconds – was his best lap of the day.
Coming off of a seventh-place finish in his Pro Cup debut, Ryan and crew were happy to end up with the tenth spot Saturday night.
Seven cautions slowed the action throughout the night. The second fell on lap 45. At that time, Heavner had already worked his way into the 11thposition.
A pit stop for fuel on lap 108 was without incident, as the KMR crew got Ryan back on-track in lightening-quick time.
While under caution at lap 137, the KMR team and their North Carolina driver decided a trip to pit road was in order. The Elite Auto Collision Chevrolet was off-and-running with fresh right-side tires. The stop turned out to be just what Heavner needed, as he turned some of his best laps of the race afterwards. Unfortunately, the race was slowed for the yellow flag again on lap 197, and Ryan’s momentum was forced to a halt.
“This was his first time at New Smyrna Speedway, and he really was becoming more comfortable with the car on this particular green flag run,” stated Candace Heavner – Ryan’s mother.
Lap 204 brought about some tense moments for Heavner and company. When trouble arose and cars went spinning, the young talent narrowly threaded his way through the carnage at-speed. He was also able to miss the spinning car of Clay Rogers on lap 236.
The green flag came out for the last time with only nine laps remaining, and Heavner went on to claim his tenth-place run.
“I would like to thank, first and foremost, Jesus Christ, for the opportunities he has allowed me to experience at such a young age,” said an excited Heavner after the checkered flag fell. “I also want to thank Kirk May Racing, Elite Auto Collision, Lawing Marble, and my family, as well as the awesome crew of guys that believe in me and work so hard to fulfill my lifelong dream.”
