HEAVNER WRANGLES TOP TEN FINISH AT SOUTH BOSTON

June 15th, 2010 (South Boston, VA) Ryan Heavner and Kirk May Racing unloaded at South Boston (VA) Speedway with a proverbial “eight ball” in front of them for the USAR Pro Cup Series Strutmasters.com 250: Ryan had never taken laps on the 4/10-mile oval. That would have proven a tough challenge for some, but the 14 year-old straight-A student from Lincolnton, NC charged head-on into a 13th-place qualifying run.
A loose-handling race car was a problem for Heavner throughout the weekend, and he was quick to mention the difficulties it caused.
“When we scuffed our new tires, we of course picked up a little as everyone else did, and the car tightened up a little more at that point,” said Heavner. “After practice, we had over a two hour delay due to rain, which changed up the condition of the racetrack altogether. The start of the race was tough. It was so loose off of every corner.”
Regardless of the car and driver not being in sync with each other, Ryan battled through the Strutmasters.com 250 like a champion, and brought home a tenth-place result.
“I would like to have run better…My goal is to win a [Pro Cup] race,” was all the rising star had to say about his sixth start in one of the country’s top touring series.
Heavner says that his first impression of South Boston is that it’s a tricky track to drive; one that requires focus and skill.
“It’s small and fast,” he said of “SoBo.” “Let off early on entry and use a descent amount of brake. I had to let the car roll through most of the center and pick the gas up like there’s an egg under the gas pedal.”
The top-ten finish means Heavner is still in the hunt for the 2010 USAR Pro Cup Rookie-of-the-Year award. Top-ten finishes have been the result in all five of the USAR events that Heavner took the green in, with mechanical failure preventing him from ever leaving the starting grid in one of the six 2010 series events.
“We believe something is going to happen as we gain more experience and move forward, like our motto says,” commented Heavner, referring to his ‘Pray until something happens’ or ‘P.U.S.H.’ motivational trademark. “I want to thank Kirk May Racing, Elite Auto Collision, McCallister Precision Marketing, and The MS Society for making this year possible for us, and, most of all, Jesus Christ for the angels of safety He’s sent each week to watch over us.”
