RYAN HEAVNER RACING RETURNS FROM MOTOR MILE SPEEDWAY, SETS FOCUS ON MYRTLE BEACH SPEEDWAY
JUNE 13TH, 2013 (ST. LOUIS, MO) Ryan Heavner has returned from Motor Mile Speedway after running a disappointing 12th, following an abundance of back luck struck the team in a single race weekend. The team is now setting sights on long acquainted Myrtle Beach Speedway, a track that has given the team great success in prior years.
Ryan Heavner and crew spent the last 6 months going over the new Pro Cup car with acute detail. However, this was the first time the team entered a Pro Cup event as a family run race team and they knew ahead of time they were heading into a steep learning curve.
Practice one, the first time the North Carolina driver climbed behind the wheel since 2012 Heavner jumped to fourth on the times sheet. However, as the team headed to qualify in Virginia, the race weekend quickly took a negative turn. A throttle linkage snapped, putting Heavner last on the starting grid after failing to set a time, a challenging race lay ahead.
The green flag dropped on the Hertitage Truck 250. The crew immediately went to work to fix a race car that had lost the set up from earlier practice sessions. Patience was important but shortly after the race begun an oil belt broke on a competitor directly ahead. A lack of front end traction caused Heavner to slide into the driver, leaving front end damage on the #33.
The body damage was minor and Ryan Heavner continued to turn laps on the speedway. However, next to plague the team would be the steering column. It had been putting pressure on the brake petal, causing the brakes to all but fail completely. The driver spent the remainder of the race limping around the 1/2 mile track, he went on to finish the race but multiple laps down to the leader in 12th.
Following the race the team discovered many mistakes on the setup sheet as well as mechanical that will be learned from and carried into the next event. While Heavner was hard on himself after climbing out of the drivers seat he is thankful to bring the car home with minor damage and now looks forward to Myrtle Beach Speedway.
Ryan Heavner Racing will head to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on June 22nd for the next Pro Cup series event to compete for the $10,000 prize. Last year, Heavner crossed the line in 5th after leading 60 laps.
The team has dug into the notebook from the prior event and is enthusiastic about unloading at Myrtle Beach Speedway with a fast baseline setup. Not only has Ryan Heavner seen a good Pro Cup finish at the speedway but in 2009 he went to victory lane on the Pro Challenge Series tour setting expectations high for the fast approaching ½ mile semi-banked speedway.
